N3 and sustainability

N3: supporting a green agenda for the NHS

What is the current situation?

The NHS has a carbon footprint of 18 million tonnes CO2 per year. Despite an increase in efficiency, the NHS has increased its carbon footprint by 40% since 1990.

Why act now?

Meeting the Climate Change Act targets of 26% reduction by 2020 and 80% reduction by 2050 will be a huge challenge unless action is taken now.

How can N3 help the NHS achieve this?

  • Increase the energy efficiency of the core and access networks
  • Stimulate a change in the way people work and how patients receive their care
  • Accessibility to national applications to enable local services and reduce wastage
  • As an aggregator, demand greener credentials from its suppliers

What can N3 do to help reduce carbon emissions?

  • By investigating and deploying effective sustainability technologies
  • By effectively managing the N3 Broadband Network and its connections
  • Identifying and implementing new end user equipments
  • Using new technologies to enable more collaborative working
  • Reviewing the procurement chain
